TV ads put the spotlight on automatic enrolment

A news series of advertisements running from today until mid-October across TV, radio, print and online media, will publicise the start of automatic enrolment next month.

Dragons' Den star Theo Paphitis and Karren Brady, Alan Sugar's assistant on The Apprentice, are just some of the well-known faces featuring on the £3.5m campaign, which is designed to shed light on what the government describes as “the biggest change in pensions for over 100 years".

Starting from October employers will be legally required to enroll employees into pension schemes, beginning with the largest companies and rolling out to include all businesses by 2018.

The celebrities featured in the advertisements gave their time and services free of charge, and the campaign features the slogan “I’m In” - highlighting their support for the overhaul of the pension’s system.

Steve Webb, the pension’s minister, said: "I'm delighted that well-known bosses have taken part in our latest awareness campaign, and back the biggest change in pensions for over a century – automatic enrolment.

"People should know that all they need to do is look out for a letter from their employer, and if they do nothing and stay "in" they are effectively getting a pay rise."

The Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) estimates that around two thirds of employees will opt to remain saving in a workplace pension, while a DWP survey revealed that just 9% of workers argued that they will not to take part in automatic enrolment or opt out of workplace pensions altogether.
