ONS data reveals fall in workplace pension uptake

Automatic enrolment into workplace pensions will begin next month, and figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed that the overhaul of the pension’s system couldn’t have come at a more apt time.

ONS data has shown that the number of active members of pension schemes at work fell from 8.3 million in 2010 to reach a figure of 8.2 million in 2011. This represents the third consecutive year that active membership of workplace pensions has taken a dip.

The drop in membership has been attributed to the private sector, continuing the steady decline in this area over the last 20 years. Over this period the number of private sector workers who actively paid into pension schemes fell by more than 3 million. In contrast, the last two decades has seen the number of public sector workers who actively paid into a workplace pension rise by more than a million.

Commenting on the figures, Joanne Segars, chief executive of the National Association of Pension Funds, said:

"The ongoing slide in pensions uptake in the private sector is deeply worrying. Our society is not saving enough for its old age and millions of workers are set to end up scraping by on just the state pension.”

She went on to add that automatic enrolment was a step in the right direction: "Auto-enrolment is a hugely important reform that will bring millions of people into a workplace pension, many for the first time.”
